ABOUT JUSTIN ANDERSON
Justin Anderson has been cooking since the age of 5, learning the ins-and-outs of the kitchen from his Puerto-Rican Grandmother and Cajun French Mother. In 2003, Anderson was your average teenager in Houston, Texas with braces. One day he broke a bracket when he bit into a hard cluster of a crunchy granola snack. Not to be deterred from eating his favorite treat, the high school student set about to create a bite-sized brand of soft granola and eventually developed a recipe that had between 120 and 130 calories and 9 to 11 grams of sugar per quarter cup, making it far less than most similar snacks on the market. In 2005, with a $500 loan from his grandma, he started his first company, Anderson Trail Premium Soft Granola, and convinced buyers at Central Market to place an order. At the time, Justin was the youngest vendor in Central Market’s history at age 18.
He graduated in 2005, then moved to Fort Worth to attend TCU, where he was awarded the Horatio Alger Association’s National Scholar Award and Scholarship, and was recruited into TCU’s entrepreneurial program where he studied both business and liberal arts. In 2013 he brought on a business partner who came with a background at Frito Lay and transitioned the granola brand to WOATS and repositioned the product as a “healthy indulgent” snack rather than just a breakfast option. The WOATS brand included a line of five flavors — Cookies ‘n’ Dreams, Jammin’ Strawberry Shortbread, Chocolate Chip Cookie, Nuts About Berries and Peanut Butter Graham Slam, with the latter two homages to his original Anderson Trail items. WOATS was a big hit for Anderson, growing distribution into more than 8500 retail doors including Target, Walmart, Home Shopping Network and globally at the United States Army Air Force Exchange. The pandemic caused delays with production and shipping and his small company couldn’t manage the volatility, so Anderson made the decision to press pause on the brand.
For many, the 2020 pandemic was a time of personal growth—people dove into fitness routines, devoured books, honed new skills, and, more than ever, tried their hand at cooking at home. Justin Anderson was one of those people. Already an innovator with two consumer products brands to his name, Justin Anderson found himself frustrated with the flavor options in his pantry as he tried to elevate his steaks. Determined to create something special, he began experimenting with unique, high-end ingredients like purple shallots, green peppercorns, and smoky Korean red pepper and Bel Air Ranch seasoning was born. His first seasoning flavor launched at Central Market in 2021. Anderson grew up watching cooking shows and has been particularly inspired by Martha Stewart, and in 2022 appeared on The Great American Tag Sale with Martha Stewart on ABC and HULU.
